History of the Katyayani Puja

Once a sage named Katyanan practiced hard penance to please the Gods. He wished for a child in the form of Goddess Durga. However, the demon Mahisaura was causing a lot of havoc for the Gods. The Gods Vishnu, Bramha and Shiva created Goddess Katyayani who emerged from the flames. She then took birth as the daughter of sage Katyanan and so came to be known as Katyanai.

Further, the Gods had gifted her with powerful weapons and 18 hands to kill the demon. There was a furious battle between the two and Goddess cut Mahisasura’s throat with her sword. This way good won over evil.
