Kartik, the eighth Lunar Month as per the Hindu calendar is one of the holiest months of all. Also, it is extremely auspicious month for any auspicious work. Mere prayers can yield huge results during this phase of the year. The most special thing about this month is that people worship both Lord Shiva and Lord Vishnu during this period.

However, Kartik Month is particularly dear to Lord Shri Krishna. This phase comes between October and November in the Gregorian calendar. There is a tradition of taking a bath in the holy river before the sun rises, the fifteenth Lunar day or Purnima of Kartik month is called Kartik Purnima and this day is celebrated by Hindus, Sikhs, and Jains as their cultural festival.

Story Behind Kartik Purnima

This year Kartik Purnima falls on the 316th day of 2019 on Tuesday, 12th of November. A lot of customs and traditions culminate on the day of Kartik Purnima, which makes it even more of an auspicious day. Each part of our country has a different tale to tell, different grounds to celebrate the grandeur of this holy month.

As an important reason for this festival, on this day Lord Vishnu takes the incarnation of Matsya, one of his ten Avatars. People also say that on the same day, Lord Shiva annihilates three demons, Tripurasura- Vidyunmali, Tarakaksha, and Viryavana. Hence it is also popular as Tripura Purnima or Tripurari Purnima. It is believed that on this day all the gods celebrate in heaven by lighting the diya,thus, we also call it Dev Diwali.

Rituals

One may observe the following foremost activities or rituals throughout the entire month of Kartik-

  • Kartik fast on the occasion of Kartik Purnima on the sixth day of this sacred month.
    Japa: Chanting the holy names of the God
  • Devotees eat tara bhojan during Kartik month, they observe fast for the whole day and eat food only after worshipping the stars in the evening. It is customary to bathe in the Ganga River on the day of Kartik Purnima and this bath is also known as Kartik Snan. and then people do Rudra Abhishek.

  • This month is also popular for Krishna and Tulasi Vivah. As per the Padma Purana: Lord Krishna says,” Of all plants, the sacred Tulasi is the dearest to me; of all moths, Kartik is most dear, of all places of pilgrimage, My beloved Dwarka is most dear to me, and of all days, Ekadashi is most dear to me” (Padma Purana, Uttara Khand 112.3)
