One name of the moon is <strong><em>&#8220;<\/em><\/strong><em>Som<\/em><strong><em>&#8220;<\/em><\/strong>, he did penance here, considering <strong>Shiva<\/strong> as his lord. This shrine is one of the oldest pilgrimage centres in the country.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Also, Somnath temple is mentioned in ancient texts &#8211; <em>Skanda Purana<\/em>, <em>Srimad Bhagavat Gita<\/em>, <em>Shiva Purana<\/em> etc. At the same time, the glory of <em>Someshwar Mahadev<\/em> is also mentioned in the <strong>Rigveda<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The temple is divided into three major parts &#8211; the <em>Garbh Grih<\/em>, <em>Sabha mandap<\/em> and <em>Nritya mandap<\/em>. It has a 150 feet high peak. The Urn on its peak weighs ten tons and its flag is 27 feet high. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Regarding its uninterrupted sea route &#8211; <strong>Trishtambha<\/strong>, it is believed that this sea route ends in the South Pole indirectly. It is considered to be amazing proof of our ancient wisdom and understanding. This temple was rebuilt by Queen <em>Ahilyabai<\/em>. According to historical sources, the invaders attacked this temple 6 times. Once he disregarded <em>Daksha&#8217;s<\/em> orders, due to which <em>Daksha<\/em> cursed him that his light would fade from day to day.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, when the other gods asked <em>Daksha<\/em> to take back his curse, he said that taking a bath in the sea at the origin of river <em>Saraswati<\/em> could prevent the outbreak of curse. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Som worshipped <strong>Lord Shiva<\/strong> by bathing in the Arabian Sea at the mouth of Saraswati.
