Women all across the country pray for their husbands to Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati. But, the main purpose behind celebrating this festival is hidden in the Hindu Mythological Tales.
It is believed that once, there was a queen named Veervati who was the only sister amongst her seven brothers. Post-marriage, the queen went to celebrate her first Karva Chauth at her parent’s house. Following every ritual that is needed to keep the fast unbreakable, she remained hungry the whole day.
However, seeing their sister experiencing severe hunger, all the brothers of the queen tricked her into breaking her Karva Chauth fast. Her brothers set a mirror in the Peepal Tree, which almost looked like the Moonrise. As soon as she saw the Moon, she broke the fast she kept for her husband. As soon as she did so, she got the news that her husband died.
When she was heading towards her husband’s house, she met Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati along the way. They told her what happened and, in return, asked for forgiveness from them. Accepting her apology, both of them told her to follow the fast strictly, adding that her husband would stay sick for some time as the punishment.
Veervati got her husband back. And, from that very day, she kept fast each year, following all rituals and puja needed to make it successful.

Each state has its own way of celebrating the beautiful occasion of Karva Chauth. In most of the places in Northern India, women fast the whole day without having anything. But prior to that, in the morning, they wake up early before sunrise to eat Sargi.
Sargi basically involves meals prepared by the mothers-in-law or other motherly figures in the house. It includes milk, dry fruits, and vermicelli (Sevaiyan). If you are fasting in Karva Chauth 2021, make sure you have Sargi, as it is considered a vital part of the entire festival.
Women in the states of Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan, Bihar, Madhya Pradesh, and Punjab buy Karve to offer water to the Moon in the night and seek blessings from him for their husband’s, long-life healthy wellbeing.
