Solar New Year marks the first day of Solar Cycle Year. In India, it is popular as the Mesha Sankranti according to the Hindu Lunisolar Calendar. In addition to this, people celebrate this occasion by different names in different parts of the country. For instance, Maha Vishuva Sankranti or Bihu or Puthandu or Pohela Baisakh or Vaisakhi.

On this day, Sun completes its Zodiac Year. Hence, it Sun Transit from Water Sign Pisces which is the 12th of the cycle to Fire Sign Aries which is the first.

Surya Dev or Lord Sun is admired by one all for its eminence and significance. There is a total of twelve transits that take place over the time of a year. Each of the twelve transits is equally significant. On each Sankranti, people take a Holy dip, observe fast, perform Hawan, and Daan. However, the Mesha Santri regards the Solar New Year. Thus, it holds higher implications.

Significance Solar New Year

For each circle, Sun takes one year to complete the transit through all the 12 signs. It begins from Aries and ends to Pisces. Additionally, Sun resides in one Sign for about 30 days or a month. Thus, when Sun transit in Aries or Mesha Rashi, it marks the beginning of the circle as well as the Solar New Year.

In Vedic Astrology, Sun is the significator of pride, warmth, designation, respect, and father. On Sankranti, performing Daan-Punya, Hawan, and helping the poor helps one to get rid of their sins. The 10 minutes before Sankranti and 10 minutes after Sankranti is highly auspicious for any prosperous or good doings. All the prayers during this time period bring fortunate results.

According to Vedic Astrology, on this day Sun transit into Mesha Rashi (Aries). Following the same culture, various regions including Tamil Nadu, West Bengal, and North India celebrates this occasion. Solar calendars follow numerous laws to mark the first day of the year depending upon the Sankranti’s precise time.

Rituals of Mesha Sankranti

  • On the day of Sankranti, people get up early. They take a holy dip in sacred rivers like Ganga and Yamuna. The day marks worshipping Lord Sun, thus it is essential to take bath before the sunrise.
  • Further, they perform rituals on Punya Kal Muhurata and begin the rituals of Sankranti. They chant devotional Mantra, strotas, and songs.
  • In North India, people drink Aam Pana on this day and distribute it after Puja.
  • Also, they eat Satvik meals on this day and perform charity.

Celebration of Mesha Sankranti in India

  • North India– In entire North India, people celebrate the Solar New Year in the form of Mesha Sankranti or Mesha Sankrant.
  • Orissa– The first day of the year is celebrated at Orissa on the same day as the Sankranti. Here, people celebrate it as Pana Sankranti.
  • Tamil Nadu– People of Tamil Nadu celebrate Sankranti after the Sunrise and before the Sunset. Here, it is known as Puthandu festival.
  • Assam– Among the Assamese people, the celebration is marked in the form of Bihu.
  • Bengal– Here, Sankranti falls between Sunrise and Midnight of the day. People call it by the name Naba Barsha or Pohela Boishakh.
  • Punjab– In Punjab, people celebrate this festival by the name Vaisakhi.
