According to the Shiva Mahapurana and other Hindu mythology, Goddess Sati, the daughter of Prajapati Daksha, was married to Mahadev. But King Daksha was not at all in favour of this marriage. One day he organized a Mahayagya. All the deities and near and dear ones were invited except Lord Shiva and Goddess Sati. Goddess Sati was deeply saddened to know this and realized that her father was only insulting her husband Shiva.
In this intolerable condition, he burnt his body in the fire of the Yoga Yagya. Mahadev was sorrowful to see all this. He separated himself from everyone and went for penance for long ages. Without them, the whole universe was in disarray. But the reincarnation of Mata Sati with the name Parvati in the house of King Himalaya raised the rays of hope. However, it was very difficult for Goddess Sati to get Lord Shiva, as Mahadev was engrossed in meditation.
With immense efforts and immense devotion, Goddess Parvati started her search and journey toward Lord Shiva. After several attempts, she remarried Mahadev.
