Vasanta Purnima, one of the six Vedic astrological seasons, is another name for Phalguna Purnima, since it falls on the same day as the Vasanta Ritu. Mythological tale behind Phalguna Purnima

The Vishnu Purana, discussed below, contains a descriptive scripture of the story of Phalguna Purnima.

This is how it all began

King Hiranyakashyap governed the realm of demons years ago, during the Satya Yuga. Everyone on Earth was experiencing a lot of pain and suffering as a result of the demon king’s actions. After ages of penance and concentration, Hiranyakashyap petitioned Lord Brahma for a blessing. Lord Brahma granted his wish, which in turn, made him an overly confident being. And what was the wish?

It was that no one can ever murder, kill, or harm Hiranyakashyap— no man, woman, animal, bird, during the day or at night, by a hand weapon or a supernatural weapon, within or outside of his palace, and lastly, by a God or a demon. He felt as though he were eternal after receiving this favour, and he started thinking of himself as the all-powerful. He commanded everyone in the empire to stop praying Lord Vishnu and to begin worshipping him instead. Moreover, anyone who refuses to comply his orders shall be punished and put to death.

Hiranyakashyap’s Fear

Because of their fear of dying, people in the kingdom started to idolise him. Yet Prahlad, Hiranyakashyap’s own son, continued to praise Lord Vishnu in defiance of his father since he was a true follower of Lord Vishnu. Hiranyakashyap became enraged by this and made the decision to have Prahlad, his own son, assassinated. Prahlad nonetheless persisted in praising Lord Vishnu and reciting “Hari.”

Hiranyakashyap’s Victory

Hiranyakashyap sought to murder Prahlad by himself when all else had failed and told him to invoke his god Shri Vishnu to save him. Lord Narasimha, a manifestation of Lord Vishnu, escaped from a castle pillar as he prepared to murder him. To assassinate Hiranyakashyap without violating the blessing that Lord Brahma had granted him, Lord Vishnu assumed this form.

The terms of the gift stipulated that Lord Narsimha was neither a human, a creature, nor was he either a God. The hour of his death was when the day and the night met, thus it was neither a day nor a night, and ultimately Lord Narasimha murdered him with his nails, which weren’t a weapon. Hiranyakashyap was pulled in the middle of the palace’s entrance, neither inside nor outside. Since then, people worship Shri Vishnu as well as Lord Narasimha on the day of Phalgun Purnima.

Celebration of Holika Dahan on Phalguna Purnima

Hiranyankashyap tried everything in his power to kill Prahlad. He even made an attempt to push him off a peak (now Dikoli Parvat), trampled on by an elephant, imprisoned in a cage full of snakes by Hiranyakashyap. But, Prahlad possessed the mercy of Lord Vishnu when he took birth. Hence, after trying everything, Hiranyakashyap turned to his sister, Holika.

She had long ago acquired a boon that rendered her invulnerable to fire. In an effort to burn Prahlad alive, Hiranyakashyap instructed her to rest on a pile of blazing wood with Prahlad in her lap. As a result, Holika, the sister of Hiranyakashyap, burned alive in the flame but Prahlad managed to survive.
