Gayatri Mantra: Meaning | Importance | Benefits

In Hinduism, Vedas and Puranas have been given special importance. The most frequently mentioned mantra written while reading Hindu texts is the Gayatri Mantra. Also, known as Savitri Mantra and considered as the most influential mantra.

Origin of Gayatri Mantra

For the first time, this mantra appeared in Rig Veda which is a Hindu text( written between 1100 BCE – 1700 BCE). In the book of Bhagavad Gita, it is mentioned as a poem of the divine.

Chanting the Gayatri Mantra which consists of four Vedas, changes the life completely. At the same time, it brings happiness to the life of a person, the body becomes healthy and a person also gets fame and wealth.

How To Chant?

However, chanting this Mantra anytime is good. But according to texts, Gayatri mantra should be chanted 3 times in a day. It is highly preferred that certain rules should be followed.

  • While chanting, always close your eyes.
  • Try to understand the meaning and focus on every single word.
  • Pronunciation of every word should be correct.
  • Chanting the mantra for 108 bead rudraksha or tulsi mala can purify one’s soul and heart and leave a calming effect on both mind and body.
  • It is chanted on 3-time period – in the morning ( 2 hrs. before Sunrise), at mid of the day and in the evening (1 hr after sunset).
  • If you practice in the morning, face the East, if you choose for evening chant, you should face the West.
  • You can recite this Mantra in morning time on an empty stomach.
