Ravidas is a well-known mystic poet and lyricist who lived between 1400 and 1500 AD, and he is one of the many poets and religious gurus. People of the Bhakti movement got influenced by Guru Ravidas, which Hinduism refers to as a spiritual devotional movement. Sikhism began as a later evolution of this movement. His devotional verses incorporated into the Sikh texts under the name of Guru Granth Sahib.

Historical significance of Guru Ravidas

Guru Ravidas (Raidas) was born in Kashi on the Magha Purnima day, a Sunday in Samvat 1433, even though there is no certain and precise information regarding the spiritual poet’s origin. The other name for Guru Ravidas was Raidas. He was raised in the village of Seer Goverdhanpur, which is now in Uttar Pradesh and is close to Varanasi. People recognize his birthplace Sri Guru Ravidas’ birthplace.

Ravidas used to make a living by making shoes. He made Sant Ramanand his guru to further his quest for knowledge. Also, he made Sant Ramanand his master after being inspired by Saint Kabir; Guru Kabir Saheb had been his first guru. Because of his pleasant demeanor, Guru Ravidas made everyone experience a pleasing environment with his persona and aura. He was incredibly charitable and friendly and enjoyed nothing more than assisting those in need.

Typically, Bhakti-inclined individuals like Ravidas take special joy in supporting sages and saints. Ravidas distributed shoes without accepting payment. His parents felt dissatisfaction with him because of his personality and behavior. Due to their dissatisfaction with Ravidas’ financial situation. Ravidas and his wife got eviction from their home. They moved into a rented house in a nearby building and began living with his wife. People used to devote most of their time to worshipping the Lord and participating in saints’ and sages’ Satsang.

How did Guru Ravidas attain sainthood?

According to the most popular narrative surrounding Sant Ravidas, once, he was playing with a companion. The next day, Sant Ravidas Ji visited the same location, but his friend was absent. In this regard, he decided to look for him, but he was unaware that his friend had passed away. He was so distraught by this news that he hurried to the spot where the dead body was lying and muttered that it was not the time for play or sleep. His companion stood up after hearing this.

Sant Ravidas had supernatural abilities, and on that day, people started believing in his abilities. As time went on, he began devoting much of his time to the worship of Lord Ram and Lord Krishna, and by adhering to religious traditions, he attained the status of a saint. 

On the day of Magha Purnima, Sant Ravi Das, a man endowed with magical abilities, celebrates his birthday. He allegedly began mending people’s shoes when he was a young child. He consistently advocated for interfaith harmony and against prejudice towards others based on their caste, religion, or creed. People still adhere to and learn from his teachings.

The impact of Guru Nanak Dev

Several academics concur that Ravidas deeply got influenced by Guru Nanak, the founder of Sikhism. As a result of his reverence for the Sikh religion, he incorporated 41 poems about it. One of the earliest sources of his ideas and writings was these poems. The scripture, written 170 years after Ravidas’s death in 1693, is one of the Seventeen Saints in Indian religious tradition.

Both, Nabhadas’s Bhaktmal from the seventeenth century and Anantadas’s Parsi contain chapters about Ravidas. Many other written sources about his life, including those by Ravidas’s followers, got written in the early 20th century. These sources include Sikh traditional texts and Hindu Dadupanthi traditions.

The Sikh community mostly celebrates the Ravidas Jayanti celebration. People of other communities and religions nevertheless continue to observe this occasion.
