Sundarkand or Sunderkand or Sundara Kanda is the fifth book of the great Hindu epic Ramayana. Originally, it is a composition in the Sanskrit language by great sage Valmiki. Later, Goswami Tulsidas translated the chapter in the Awadhi language as Ramcharitmanas. In general, Sundarkand means The Book of Beauty. Typically, this book portrays the splendor of Lord Hanuman’s dedication and realization of his powers during the battle of Ramayana between demon King Ravana and Lord Rama.
There are 7 in total Kand in Ramayana- Bala Kanda, Ayodhya Kanda, Aranya Kanda, Kishkindha Kanda, Sundara Kanda, Yuddha Kanda, and Uttara Kanda. In every chapter or Kand, Lord Ram is the protagonist.
However, Sundara Kanda is the Ramayana’s only chapter where the protagonist is not Rama, but Hanuman. There are a total of 64 Sargas in Sunderkand out of which Lord Ram is mentioned in 4. The sacred text of the book depicts devotion, selflessness, and adventures of Lord Hanuman. Embracing splendid life-lessons, this chapter of Ramaya is read and taught to almost every child Hindu Dharma. Not only it wards off all the hurdles but it also teaches the value and significant learnings of various stages of life.
Sundarkand mentions the glory of Lord Hanuman. This chapter beautifully encompasses hidden meanings in poetry, therefore it is known as Sundar Kanda.
In the Sunderkand path, Lord Hanuman learns about his own powers after Jamwant tells him. Further, he travels across the ocean, slaughters, curse-free demons of the ocean to reach Lanka to meet Goddess Sita. This chapter offers a narrative of how much Lord Ram loves his wife and how he sends Hanumana to give her a message. It takes away a long-time misery of Goddess Sita and bestows her happiness.
