In our Sanatana Dharma, one of the most sacred rituals in a child's life is the namkaran sanskar. Here, the newborn is given their first permanent identity, i.e., their name. However, it is never random. The name mirrors their personality, future, and the path they take in life. Traditionally, it is performed on the 10th to 12th day after birth. But it can also be scheduled later based on family customs and astrological guidance. However, choosing the right namkaran muhurat is important as it aligns the event with auspicious planetary positions for blessings and prosperity.
Let’s look at the Namkaran Muhurat dates for 2026.

Namkaran is usually performed on the 10th, 11th, or 12th day after birth, once the initial post-birth purification period (Sutak) ends. However, depending on family tradition, health conditions, and convenience, it may also be held within the first 21 days or even up to a few months after birth. The timing is chosen based on an auspicious Namkaran Muhurat from the Panchang, considering nakshatra, tithi, and planetary positions.
Namkaran Muhurat is considered an auspicious time to perform your baby's naming ceremony according to the Hindu Panchang. When you opt for the best Namkaran Muhurat , you invite good fortune, health, happiness, and prosperity into the child's life.
The naming ceremony is one of the sixteen Hindu samskaras. During the selected muhurat, panditji will perform Vedic rituals, offer prayers, and bless the child before announcing the name.
An auspicious tithi, nakshatra, and weekday are important for the Namkaran ceremony. Favourable tithis include Dwitiya (2nd), Tritiya (3rd), Panchami (5th), Saptami (7th), Dashami (10th), Ekadashi (11th), Trayodashi (13th), and Purnima (Full Moon).
The best nakshatras for naming ceremonies include Ashwini, Rohini, Mrigashira, Punarvasu, Pushya, Hasta, Chitra, Swati, Anuradha, Shravana, Dhanishta, Shatabhisha, Uttara Phalguni, Uttara Ashadha, and Uttara Bhadrapada. Among weekdays, Monday, Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday are considered the most favourable for performing the Namkaran ceremony.
Your baby's Namkaran Muhurat is calculated using the Hindu Panchang and the baby's birth details. An astrologer checks the tithi (lunar day), nakshatra (birth star), yoga, karana, and the positions of the planets to find the most auspicious time for the ceremony. They also make sure the muhurat does not fall during inauspicious periods like Rahu Kaal, Yamaganda, Gulika Kaal, Bhadra, or an eclipse. Your baby's birth chart is also used to suggest the first letter or sound of the name.
