Panchang is a concept in Vedic astrology that determines auspicious timings for important events and analyses a person's birth chart using its 5 elements. It includes Vara (day of the week), Tithi (moon phase), Nakshatra (constellation), Yoga (a special calculation based on the Sun's and Moon's combined position), and Karana (half a lunar day).
Among all the elements of Panchang, Karana is the most precise. In simple terms, one Karana is completed each time the Moon gains 6 degrees over the Sun, making it exactly half of a Tithi, which spans 12 degrees. There are 11 Karana types in total, divided into 7 movable and 4 fixed. Together, they predict a person's nature at birth and help identify auspicious and inauspicious timings within each Tithi.
There are 7 movable karanas, among which 6 are auspicious. Other than it, 4 are immovable, and the 7th one from movable is not considered to be auspicious.
