Story of Paush Putrada Ekadashi Fast

The Paush Putrada Ekadashi fast is associated with a compelling narrative from Hindu mythology. According to the legend, there was a mighty and benevolent king named Suketuman ruling over the city of Bhadravati. Despite his virtuous rule, the king faced a deep sorrow – he had no heirs to inherit his throne.

Distressed by the absence of an heir, King Suketuman approached the sage Vasishtha for guidance. Sage Vasishtha, known for his wisdom, advised the king to observe the Paush Putrada Ekadashi fast with utmost devotion. The sage explained that observing this sacred fast could fulfill the king’s heartfelt desire for a worthy successor.

Following the sage’s instructions, King Suketuman observed the Paush Putrada Ekadashi fast with sincerity and devotion. He refrained from consuming food and water throughout the day and engaged in prayers and meditation dedicated to Lord Vishnu.

Pleased with the king’s unwavering devotion, Lord Vishnu appeared before him and granted a divine fruit. The king was instructed to give the fruit to his queen, who would then conceive and bear a noble son.

True to the divine prophecy, Queen Shaibya consumed the fruit and, in due course, gave birth to a virtuous and capable son who eventually succeeded King Suketuman. Thus, the Paush Putrada Ekadashi fast became renowned for its power to fulfill the desire for progeny and the continuity of a royal lineage.

Devotees observing this fast today do so with the belief that their sincere prayers and penance will similarly be rewarded with the blessings of Lord Vishnu for the gift of children.
