With the commencement of August, it’s officially the festive season on the cards for Indians across the world. Apart from Janmashtami 2021, which we will talk about in this blog, we have many more festivals lined up in the coming months, right from Navratri, Dussehra to Diwali and Christmas. So as you prepare for these joyous galas, let’s also behold the significance of these festivals and how can we celebrate them correctly to get the best out of them.
Krishna, the 8th incarnation of Lord Vishnu, is a God of love, tenderness and compassion. He is known as the protector of Dharma and is the supreme mind behind the battle of Kurukshetra.
The birth story of Krishna is extremely interesting. Krishna was born to Devaki and Vasudeva to kill the demon Kansa, an arrogant king who ruled over Mathura. When Devaki, Kansa’s sister, was getting married to Vasudeva, an astrologer had predicted that the child born to Devaki and Vasudeva will become the death of Kansa.
It was then Kansa locked both of them in a prison and killed all their children soon after they were born. But as Devaki gave birth to her 8th child, Krishna, a light-filled the prison room. The light guided Vasudeva across the Yamuna. However, as he was crossing the river, it was raining heavily and the Yamuna was stormy and windy. It was then, Lord Vishnu’s Shesh Naag, the giant multi-headed snake, came and helped Vasudeva carry Krishna safely across the river.

The light guided Vasudeva to Nandraja, the head of the Gopa tribe. Nandraja and his wife, Yashodha, had also given birth to a baby girl, which was exchanged by Vasudeva.
As Kansa was told that Devaki has given birth to her 8th child, he came to kill the child. When Kansa tried to kill the exchanged baby, it transformed into Goddess Durga. The Goddess warned him that his death had arrived in his kingdom and soon vanished.
Krishna, meanwhile, grew up unaware of his destiny, far away from all the chaos of Mathura, in Gokul, with Nanda Baba and his wife Yashoda. After years, he finally killed Kansa.
Janmashtami is a festival dedicated to Lord Krishna. Krishna Janmashtami is the day when Lord Krishna was born. To be precise, Lord Krishna was born on the 8th day of Krishna paksha in the month of Bhadrapada. Janmashtami in 2021 will be celebrated on 30th August.
As per Hindu panchang, the Ashtami Tithi of Krishna Paksha of Bhadramas will start at 11.25 pm on Sunday, i.e. 29th August. Ashtami Tithi will remain till 1.59 pm on 30th August. Therefore Janmashtami will be celebrated across the country on 30th August. The auspicious time of worship will be from 11:59 to 12:44 on the night of August 30.
Many people do consider fasting on Janmashtami. If you are also the one, then you must abide by fasting muhurat for Janmashtami 2021 for the best results. As per our astrologers, Janmashtami vrat should only begin after the rohini nakshatra. Rohini Nakshatra will end the next day i.e. on August 31 at 09.44 am. That is why, Vrat paran should be done after this.
To start with, you need to decide what kind of Krishna idol would be perfect for the Janmashtami puja. As per our astrologers, a metal idol of Lord Krishna, which has a cow is best for Krishna pooja.
Talking about ingredients for Janmashtami pooja, you need to arrange things like unsalted butter, ornaments, paan flowers, chandan, akshat kumkum, water, tulsi leaves, mishri, apple, kalash, oil lamp, incense, supari, fruits like pears, banana, sweet lime, chandamirch, sweetened dry fruits, some coins or notes, a whole coconut with the husk.
