  • Durga Puja: The primary focus during Sharad Navratri is the worship of Goddess Durga. Devotees perform elaborate Durga Puja, which involves invoking the goddess, offering flowers, incense, and sweets, and reciting sacred hymns and mantras.
  • Fasting: Fasting is an integral part of Navratri for many devotees. They abstain from grains, non-vegetarian food, and certain other items. Fasting is seen as a means of purifying the body and mind, as well as showing devotion to the goddess.
  • Dandiya and Garba: In Gujarat and many other parts of India, Dandiya and Garba dances are a major attraction during Navratri. People dress in traditional attire, play lively music, and dance with colorful sticks (Dandiya) or in circles (Garba) to celebrate the festival’s spirit.
  • Kanya Pujan: On the eighth or ninth day of Navratri, Kanya Pujan (girl-child worship) is performed. Nine young girls, representing the nine forms of Goddess Durga, are invited to homes and offered food, gifts, and blessings.
  • Sindoor Khela: On the last day, Vijayadashami, married women participate in Sindoor Khela. They apply vermilion to the goddess’s idol and to each other, symbolizing the celebration of marital bliss and the triumph of good over evil.
  • Visiting Temples: Devotees visit temples dedicated to Goddess Durga and other deities during Navratri. Many temples host grand celebrations, including processions, cultural performances, and bhajans (devotional songs).

The Legend Behind Sharad Navratri:

The legend associated with Sharad Navratri is the story of Goddess Durga’s victory over the demon Mahishasura. According to Hindu mythology, Mahishasura, a powerful demon, terrorized the heavens and the earth. Unable to withstand his tyranny, the gods created Goddess Durga, who was bestowed with divine weapons and powers.

A fierce battle ensued between Durga and Mahishasura, lasting for nine days and nights. On the tenth day, Durga defeated the demon, symbolizing the victory of good over evil. This day is celebrated as Vijayadashami or Dussehra, marking the triumphant return of Lord Rama after his victory over Ravana.

The Spiritual Essence:

Sharad Navratri is not merely a series of rituals and celebrations; it carries profound spiritual significance. It is a time for introspection, devotion, and connecting with the divine feminine energy. Devotees seek the goddess’s blessings for strength, knowledge, and prosperity in their lives. The fasting and prayers during Navratri are believed to purify the body and mind, enabling individuals to attain spiritual growth and inner peace.
