Tulsi Vivah is a sacred Hindu ceremony that celebrates the union of Lord Vishnu and Tulsi. In many traditions, Lord Vishnu is represented as a Shaligram stone. In many traditions, Tulsi is deeply respected in Hindu households and is traditionally regarded as a sacred plant associated with purity, devotion, and Lord Vishnu. The marriage ceremony therefore represents the union of two revered aspects of Hindu religious tradition.
The ceremony or festival takes place much like a Hindu wedding, where Lord Vishnu is adorned as the groom, and Tulsi is adorned as the bride with a chunari, jewellery, earrings, and a nose pin. A whole mandap is set up, followed by prayers, aarti and distribution of prasad. Want to know how the entire ceremony takes place and when to perform it? What is shubh puja muhurat? If yes, the following sections contain all your answers.
The significance of Tulsi Vivah is not only limited to the marriage of Tulsi and Lord Vishnu. There are also other reasons why this day is marked as a major celebration in the Hindu calendar. Know why.
Vrinda was married to a demon named Jalandhar. Vrinda loved her husband too much, and for his protection she had attained a mystical shield. Because of that shield, no one was able to harm Jalandhar. It was then that Lord Vishnu stepped in and, in the form of Jalandhar, tricked Vrinda, angering her. She cursed Lord Vishnu, who turned into Shaligram and sacrificed herself. In recognition of her devotion and loyalty, Lord Vishnu promised to marry her every single year.
Tulsi Vivah is traditionally associated with the time when Lord Vishnu awakens from deep sleep during the Chaturmas. In Chaturmas, Hindu weddings do not take place and are considered to be inauspicious. However, Tulsi Vivah marks Lord Vishnu's awakening from cosmic sleep and is considered an auspicious time for marriage.
Householders who marry women who perform Tulsi Puja are believed to seek blessings for the married couple. It symbolises love, harmony, and peace in the marriage. Married women perform the Puja with wedding rituals to seek blessings of Akhand Subhagyavati. Performing the puja with all the customs helps married women seek blessings for the protection of their husbands and their long lives.
In Hindu tradition and culture, the most selfless act a parent can perform is the Kanyadan of their daughter. Parents without a daughter can perform Tulsi Puja for Kanyadan. Performing all the rituals of Tulsi Vivah, believing her to be a daughter and selflessly devoting her to Lord Vishnu, is also an act of Kanyadan. Doing so is believed to earn spiritual merit similar to that of Kanyadan.
Tulsi Vivah is one of those days when the Angan, or courtyard, is decorated and Tulsi is worshipped. The Tulsi plant releases fresh oxygen and improves the environment. Fresh air not only purifies the home but also benefits family members' health. In a nutshell, this festival brings positive energy ahead of the winter season.
The Tulsi Vivah puja vidhi varies as per different cultures and traditions. However, the general or basic steps involved in this puja are common among all. Get to know with the vidhi stated below.
The first step to do Tulsi Puja is to wake up early in the morning and wear clean clothes. After you do so, it is now time to prepare the puja area. Clean the space and surroundings where Tulsi plant is kept in your house. Also, family members who decide to do Kanyadaan on this day fasts until the rituals in the evening.
After the surroundings are all clean, it is now time to decorate The Tulsi plant. It is because she is considered as a bride during the Vivah or wedding. It is why Tulsi is also decorated like a bride, wherein items such as jewellery, chunari, and flowers are taken into use to give her a beautiful form for the special day. However, one thing to take care is that while you decorate the pot or the plant, be careful, and not do damage to plant in any case.
After bride has been given its beautiful form, it is now time to set up mandap for the wedding to actually start. Devotees usually do this with the help of sugarcane. A canopy is prepared using the sugarcane. It is created around Tulsi. The use of sugarcane signifies sweetness and is also a good harvest. It symbolically indicates that its sweetness also embeds into the wedding and keep the husband and wife happy with each other.
Once the mandap is set up with sugarcane, it is now time to place Lord Vishnu or Shaligram. Decorate the Tulsi plant with red chunari, earrings, and a nose ring. On the other hand, decorate or give Shaligram appearance of a groom by tying yellow cloth and a Janeyu. The exact dressing up of both Lord Vishnu and Tulsi depends upon the family traditions and customs that has been following since ages.
Now that the bride, groom, and mandap are ready, it is time to begin the wedding rituals. At every Hindu festival or the beginning of anything auspicious, Lord Ganesha’s name is invoked. It is therefore on this day as well that his name is chanted and puja is performed to ensure that no challenges or obstacles arise and that the wedding and the successful completion of the grand event proceed smoothly.
The wedding rituals take place with a red cloth held between Lord Vishnu and Tulsi, serving as a barrier. Once the auspicious muhurat begins, drop the red cloth and start showering the couple with flowers and rice. It signifies the couple's union.
Afterwards, a knot is tied with Kalava between the couple, symbolising their journey of marriage till eternity. Lastly, hold the Lord Vishnu statue or Shaligram stone in your hand and rotate it clockwise either four or seven times for the phere and the completion of the wedding ritual, as per Hindu tradition.
Lastly, fruits and sweets are offered to Lord Vishnu and Tulsi as a Bhog. It can also vary as per your traditions and customs. With Bhog, chant mantras and do prayers to seek their blessings. Once you are done with Aarti, distribute the bhog among family members and whosoever was present in the wedding as prasad. It marks the couple's wedding and the cosmic union, and seeks blessings as a married woman for the husband’s longevity and good health.
