Kajari Teej also known as Kajali Teej falls on the Krishna Paksha that is the third day of Sawan. It is celebrated all over North India with immense joy. Hindu married women fast for the longevity of their husbands on this very day. Further, this festival is for women who celebrate it in the month of July or August. and generally, it occurs 3 days after Raksha Bandhan. Significance of Kajali Teej

Kajali Teej’s other names are Bundi Teej and Satudi Teej. Basically, it occurs after the Haryaali Teej that is the Choti Teej and this is the Badi Teej. Women fast on this auspicious day for a happy married life. This puja grants them with the same and a husband’s long life. It also signifies the unity of the two lovers. Moreover, it is to proclaim the arrival of monsoon and bidding farewell to the harsh summer heat.

Core Rituals and Festivity

Every region has its own way of observing this day with utmost dedication. But some common rituals performed are:

Married women observe fast for a prosperous married life. However, in some cases, unmarried girls also take up the fast to get a good husband.

Further, dishes are made out of Sattu that includes wheat gram rice and barley.

Moreover, worshipping cows on this day is common. Women feed chappatis coated with ghee to them. Also, the worshipping of the neem tree can be seen at this festival.

After worshipping Goddess Neemdi, the Moon is also observed by offering water.

Whereas in Madhya Pradesh and Uttar Pradesh swing on Jhula and dance on fresh fields. In central India, people celebrate the day with great frenzy.

Though women fast on this day, delicious foods are still prepared for the family and the Goddess Teej.

Sweets– Kheer, Kaju Katli, Badam ka Halwa, Ghewar and Sattu etc.

Snacks– Puri, Kachori and Moong Dal Samosa.

Drinks– Sattu Drink and Chhach.

Legends of Kajari Teej

According to Indian mythology, Kajari was a dense forest in Central India that was under the king Dadurai. The subjects adored the king and use to sing songs in praise of the forest. After the death of the king his wife did Sati, the pupils were upset by this news. The true dedication of a wife towards his husband led to the emergence of Kajari Teej.

In addition, there another tale of Goddess Parvati fasting for 108 years for Lord Shiva. Parvati did the fast for marital bliss between the two. However, Lord Shiva was skeptical, but after the harsh act of her wife, he caved in to become one. Their holy union took place on Krishna Paksha of Bhaprada month. So this day is now recognized as Kajari Teej.
