Parivartini Ekadashi 2026: Date, Vrat Vidhi, Significance and Vamana Story

Parivartini_Ekadashi

Parivartini Ekadashi is one of the most auspicious Ekadashis, also known as Vamana Ekadashi, dedicated to Lord Vishnu. It is observed during the Shukla Paksha of the Bhadrapada month, with an interesting belief attached to it: Bhagwan Vishnu changes his sleeping position while in his Yog Nidra.

For devotees, this Ekadashi is the day to pray, observe a Vrat and seek the blessings of Lakshminarayan. An interesting mythological story of the Vamana incarnation of Lord Vishnu and King Bali makes this day spiritually special.

If you are planning to observe Parivartini Ekadashi 2026, knowing the date, muhurata, rules, and parana time can help you prepare for the day.

Significance of Parivartini Ekadashi: Why Bhagwan Vishnu Turns His Side

The word Parivartini indicates a change or turning. According to Hindu beliefs, Lord Vishnu turns his position during Yog Nidra on this Tithi. This is why the day is known as Parivartini Ekadashi.

On this day, devotees observe Vrat, chant mantras, read Katha, and surrender them to Lord Vishnu and Maa Lakshmi with extreme devotion.

Connection to Chaturmas

This Ekadashi falls during Chaturmas, a four-month period when Bhagwan Vishnu is believed to undergo Yog Nidra. In such a period, people should focus on prayer, fasting, self-discipline and charity. His Yog Nidra makes the day more important.

Lord Vamana Avatar and King Bali Katha

According to a popular mythological story, King Bali was an arrogant, powerful ruler who conquered all three worlds through his intense devotion. When he came to possess all three worlds, Bhagwan Vishnu appeared before him as a dwarf Brahmin named Vamana and asked for three steps of land.

King Bali couldn’t say no to a Brahmin and willingly fulfilled his wish. Vamana then took a gigantic form and covered the earth with his first step and the heaven with his second. Now, with no place left for the third step, King Bali offered his own head.

This story shows the tragic downfall of arrogance and represents the devotion, generosity, and extreme surrender to Bhagwan Vishnu by King Bali.
