On the day of Ganesh Chaturthi, Lord Ganesha’s idol is placed and worshipped in homes, temples and puja pandals. But it is also important to perform Ganesh visarjan according to the proper rituals; only then will you get the full benefits of the puja. That’s why Ganesh visarjan is performed after Ganesh Chaturthi. Come, let’s find out which day is considered auspicious for Ganesh visarjan and what you can offer to Bappa according to your zodiac sign.

Ganesh Chaturthi on 14 September, 2026

Ganesh Chaturthi festival is celebrated every year according to the panchang on the Chaturthi tithi of the Shukla Paksha in the Bhadrapada month, and Ganpati visarjan is performed on the Chaturdashi Tithi (Anant Chaturdashi) of the Shukla Paksha. This year, Ganesh Chaturthi falls on Monday, 14 September, and Anant Chaturdashi on Friday, 25 September.

Why Is Ganpati Visarjan Performed?

According to religious beliefs, when we bring Bappa home on Ganesh Chaturthi, happiness and prosperity also come home with him. During Ganesh visarjan, sorrow, pain, and difficulties are also immersed in the water. However, the mythological story of Ganpati visarjan is related to Maharishi Ved Vyas and the writing of the Mahabharata.

According to the katha, when Maharishi Ved Vyas decided to write the Mahabharata, Lord Ganesha was given the task of writing it. Lord Ganesha used his broken right tusk as a pen and wrote the Mahabharata continuously for 10 days without stopping. This is how the writing of the Mahabharata was completed. However, due to writing continuously for 10 days, Lord Ganesha’s body temperature rose. To reduce Lord Ganesha’s body temperature, Maharishi Ved Vyas bathed Ganesha in a nearby lake on the day of Anant Chaturdashi. This is why there is a tradition of keeping Ganesha at home for 10 days and then immersing Lord Ganesha’s idol in water.

When to Perform Ganesh Visarjan

Ganesh Chaturthi is called as a 10-day festival. Traditionally, Ganesh visarjan is performed after 10 days. But in today’s busy life, it might not be possible to keep lord ganesha at home for 10 days straight and perform the puja according to all the religious rituals. That’s why the scriptures mention performing Ganesh visarjan within half a day, 3 days, 5 days, 7 days, or up to 10 days. Come, let’s find out for how many days and in what muhurat Ganesh visarjan should be performed.

Ganesh Visarjan: Puja Vidhi

Just as Ganpatipati sthapana is performed with devotion and with proper rituals, the visarjan should also be performed properly. Many people leave the Ganpati idol here and there after the puja, but they should not do this. It is considered best to use a water source for visarjan. Before visarjan, perform Ganpati’s uttar puja. In this, offer Flowers, Rice Grains, Durva, Bhog, Vermilion (kumkum), Turmeric, Naivedya, etc., and do the aarti with the entire family. Pray to Ganpati to return soon next year, and respectfully take the idol to the visarjan site. If you are performing visarjan at home, you can use a tub or bucket.
