Navratri 2023 Day: Day Five
Form of Durga Maa to worship: Maa Skandamata
Colors to wear: White
Flower to offer: Hibiscus or red rose
Any person who wishes to have a child must worship this form of Maa Durga. Devotees believe that Maa Skandamata protects her devotees like her own sons. For this reason, she is also called the first childbearing woman. Please tell them that she is known as Skandamata because she is the Mata of Lord Skanda Kumar Kartikeya.
She rides on a lion and has four arms. Along with this, the child Skanda, i.e., Kartikeya sits on his lap with a lotus flower in one of her arms. The upper arm of his left side is called Varamudra, and the lower arm has another white lotus flower. Mata is also called Padmasana because of having a seat on a lotus flower. According to the belief, the knowledge of the person increases by worshipping Goddess Skandamata with a true heart. It is the reason why she is also known as Vidyavahini Durga.

According to a legend, there was a demon named Tarakasura. He had done severe penance. This pleased Brahma ji, and in turn, he gave him his darshan. Asura Tarakasura had asked Brahma ji for the boon of being immortal. Then Brahma ji told him that the end of every living being is certain, i.e., the one who is born must die. Hearing this, the demon Tarakasura became very disappointed, and then very cleverly he again asked Brahma ji for a boon that he would die only at the hands of Lord Shiva’s son.
He said this because he felt that Lord Shiva would never marry, so he would have no son and be immortal forever. After this, Brahma ji gave him this boon. After getting the boon, he started doing gruesome violence to the people. His atrocities created a lot of fear among the people. Then all the afflicted people went to Lord Shiva and prayed to free them from the atrocities of Tarakasura.
Then Shiva ji married Goddess Parvati, and a son was born to her, Skanda, i.e., Kartikeya. After this, Maata Parvati took the form of Goddess Skandamata to train her son Skanda to fight with Asura Tarakasura. After taking training from his Maata, Shiva’s son, i.e., Kartikeya killed the demon Tarakasura and freed all people from his atrocities forever.
