Papankusha Ekadashi Vrat Katha
The Papankusha Ekadashi Vrat Katha is a sacred story narrated by Lord Krishna to King Yudhistara. There lived a cruel king named Mahabali. He was someone who would commit all kinds of bad deeds, hunted innocent animals, was short-tempered, and drank alcohol. Because of his lifestyle, he had accumulated bad karma.
As he grew old, he grew worried and became aware that his bad deeds would lead him to face the consequences in hell at the hands of Lord Yama. He became worried and ran to the sage Angira Muni to ask what he should do to free himself from merciless actions in the lower realms. To it, the sage responded that whosoever, in the Shukla paksha of the Ashvin month, observes Papankusha Ekadashi and worships Lord Padmanabha, can free themselves from accumulated sins.
Mahabli listened to whatever the sage said and applied it as per the rules. He woke up early, took sankalp, observed fast as per the rules, chanted Lord Padmanabha's name all day, and remained awake all night listening to hymns and reading scriptures. As he performed the fast with utmost devotion, when his last time came, instead of Lord Yama coming to receive him, the divine messengers of Lord Vishnu came up to receive him and took him to Vaikuntha, the abode of Lord Vishnu.
Moral of Papankusha Ekadashi Vrat Katha
- Whoever observes a fast on this day can remove accumulated sins from their life, as the name suggests: “Pap” meaning “sins” and “Ankusha” meaning “elephant goad that pierces and resolves all sins.
- No matter how many sins you have committed, the divine doors remain open to all devotees through dedication and devotion.
