History

The Sandhi Pooja

The Puja of Durga Ashtami is the most auspicious day for the Durga Puja. Devotees perform this Puja on both Ashtami & Navami. Sandhi period or Kaal is the final 24 minutes before Ashtami and the first 24 minutes on Navami for Sandhi Pooja. Sandhi Kaal is to the most favorable period for Durga Puja. Since it is only at this time that Ashtami Tithi finishes, and Navami Tithi starts.

There is a practice of slaughtering an animal and presenting it to Devi during Sandhi Puja. However, rather than killing an animal as a gift to the Goddess, followers provide bananas, pumpkins, and even Armenian cucumbers (kakdi).
