Shardiya Navratri 2026 Day 1: Shardiya Navratri begins on the Pratipada Tithi of the Shukla Paksha in the Ashwin month and continues until Navami Tithi. This year, Shardiya Navratri will be from October 11 to October 19, 2026, and Dussehra will be celebrated on October 20. During the nine days of Navratri, worshipping the nine forms of Maa Durga holds special significance. The first day is dedicated to the first form of Maa Durga: Shailputri. On the first day, Ghatasthapana or Kalash Sthapana is also performed. Come, let’s learn the goddess’s puja vidhi on the first day, the vidhi and time of Ghatasthapana, and the auspicious yog’s and planetary transits forming on this day.
In 2026, during Shardiya Navratri, Ghatasthapana (Kalash Sthapana) will be performed on Sunday, October 11, on the Pratipada Tithi of Ashwin Shukla Paksha. The Pratipada Tithi will begin at 9:19 PM on October 10 and end at 9:30 PM on October 11. These two Muhurats will be auspicious for Ghatasthapana.
Ghatasthapana, or Kalash Sthapana, marks the beginning of Shardiya Navratri. For Ghatasthapana, clean a copper, brass, or sand vessel(kalash) and fill it with pure water or Gangajal. Put a coin, betel nut, flowers, Akshat, and turmeric knots inside the vessel. Then make a Swastik on the vessel (kalash) and tie a Kalava around its neck. Place five mango leaves on top and cover it with a lid. Wrap a red cloth around a coconut, tie it with thread(Kalava), and place it on top of the vessel. Many people sow barley on Ghatasthapana. For this, put soil in a wide clay pot, sow barley seeds in it, and sprinkle some water. Keep this barley in front of Maa Durga throughout Navratri. In the end, light a ghee diya. Offer kumkum, flowers, Akshat, chunri, and Naivedya to Maa Durga and perform the puja.

On the first day of Navratri, after Ghatasthapana, worship Maa Shailputri. On this day, after taking a bath, wearing orange, red, or yellow clothes is considered to be auspicious. Offer kheer, Barfi, and Rabri to the goddess and chant the mantras. In the end, perform the aarti and distribute Prasad among everyone.
The first day of Navratri is dedicated to the first form of Maa Durga: Maa Shailputri. She was born as the daughter of the Himalayas; that is the reason why she was named Shailputri. Her vehicle is a bull. The touching Katha of Maa Shailputri begins when Prajapati organised a Yagya and invited all the gods, but Mahadev was not invited. Sati was excited to go to the Yagya, which was being held at her father’s house. Even after Mahadev asked her not to go, she did not agree. But in the end, Mahadev had to allow Sati to go to the Yagya. When Sati reached there, she saw that everyone’s behaviour was bad except towards her mother. Her father Daksha’s words were full of sarcasm and mockery. He was insulting Mahadev in front of everyone. Sati could not bear the insult of her husband and burned herself in the Yagya fire. Sati was born again as the daughter of the King of Mountains, Himalaya, and she came to be known as Maa Shailputri.
