Eighth Day of Navratri: Maa Mahagauri’s Puja Vidhi

After Maa Kaalratri, the eighth day of Navratri is dedicated to the worship of Maa Mahagauri. Maa Mahagauri is worshipped as the eighth form of Maa Durga. Worshipping her makes even impossible tasks possible, and Maa blesses her devotees with the fulfilment of their wishes. On this day, wake up early, take a bath, and wear white clothes for the puja. Then purify the idol of Maa Mahagauri with Gangajal and offer white clothes to the Goddess. Apply kumkum or Roli tilak and offer white flowers, fruits, and Akshat while doing the puja. Maa Mahagauri especially likes Halwa, Black gram, and Coconut as offerings. After offering the Bhog, do mantra chanting and then perform the aarti. And at the end, distribute the prasad.

Along with the worship of Mahagauri on Maha Ashtami, Kanya Puja is also considered important. Some people perform Kanya Puja on Ashtami, while some perform it on Navami Tithi. You can perform Kanya Puja according to your family tradition. For Kanya Puja, respectfully invite nine young girls and one young boy (Batuk Bhairav) to your home, wash their feet, apply tilak, and serve them food. After this, give them gifts, seek their blessings, and see them off.

  • On Mahagauri, visit a Shiva temple and offer water, gram dal, a yellow flower, jaggery, and sandalwood to the Shivling. This is believed to strengthen your luck.
  • Burn cow dung in a censer and add loban, guggal, camphor, or ghee. Offer the incense to the Goddess and spread its smoke in the house. This remedy is believed to remove all the negative energy from the home.

Maa Mahagauri’s Katha

According to the mythology associated with the eighth form, Maa Mahagauri, Goddess Parvati lived in the forest for many years and performed intense penance to win Lord Shiva as her husband. During this time, she gave up food and water and survived only on roots and dry leaves while tolerating the heat and rain. Due to her intense penance, the Goddess’s body became dark.

Pleased with her unwavering devotion, Lord Shiva appeared and accepted Parvati as his wife. However, the Goddess wanted to get rid of her dark complexion. Then Lord Shiva poured the holy Gangajal flowing from his matted hair over her body. Just after she bathed in Gangajal, her body became radiant and fair. Goddess Parvati’s dark form came to be known as Kaushiki, while the extremely fair form which she attained came to be known as Mahagauri.
