Ahoi Vrat Katha

On the day of Ahoi Ashtami, one must listen to the Ahoi Vrat Katha.

The Katha of Ahoi Ashtami is like this – In ancient times, a moneylender was living happily in a city with his wife and seven sons. Before the festival of Deepawali, the moneylender’s wife goes to the river to collect soil near the river to help in cleaning the house.

Unfortunately, a child of porcupine dies from the spade of the moneylender’s wife. It made the moneylender’s wife sad but no one could postpone it. After some time, the seven sons of the moneylender die one by one. Therefore, the moneylender and his woman become extremely sad. Knowing this, an old woman asks the mother to worship goddess Durga on the day of Ahoi Ashtami and draw pictures of porcupine’s children.

The moneylender and his wife observe fast on Ashtami Tithi in Kartik month and worship Mata Ahoi and apologize for their sins. Upon this, they get their sons by the blessings of Ahoi Mata. In this way, every year, the couple started worshiping Devi Ahoi regularly with devotion and live their lives happily.
