Maa Katyayani’s Katha

Worshipping Maa Katyayani on the sixth day of Navratri helps remove sorrow, suffering, distress, and fear. It also destroys the sins of past lives. Maa Katyayani is worshipped as the sixth form of Maa Durga. According to mythology, Maharishi Katyayan performed severe penance to Maa Adishakti to have a daughter. Pleased with his devotion, Maa granted him the boon that she would be born in his home as his daughter; because she was born in Maharishi Katyayan’s home, she came to be known as Katyayani.

According to the Puranas, the demon Mahishasura once became increasingly cruel and caused great trouble. Maa Katyayani killed Mahishasura, which is why she is also known as Mahishasuramardini. After Mahishasura’s death, Shumbha and Nishumbha attacked heaven, took Indra’s throne, and held the Navagrahas (the nine planets) hostage; after this, all the gods prayed to the Goddess, and then Maa Katyayani also killed Shumbha and Nishumbha, freeing the gods from this dangerous situation.
