Devotees even fast on the day along with visiting temples and offering ghee and milk.

In addition, he stressed the importance of helping others and advised them to offer charity in order to acquire the pleasure of inner peace. Similarly, Vishnu, as the supreme Guru to Lords, at multiple instances had advised the latter. He is also the mind behind Samudra Manthan.
The churning of the Milky Ocean is the story that explains how the Gods finally defeated the demons and became immortal. It was, for the unaware, Vishnu himself who advised the Lords to churn the ocean to recover treasures, including the elixir of immortality and Goddess Lakshmi.
However, knowing that Gods alone wouldn’t be able to churn the ocean all by themselves, he struck a deal with demons. He offered the demons a share of the elixir of immortality for their help and also advised Lords and Demons to use Mount Madura as a churning stick and serpent Vasuki, as the rope.
Later, when the elixir of immortality rose, Vishnu himself donned the form of Mohini, a beautiful woman to lure the demons and deprive them of the elixir. All this helped Gods defeat the demons and also tagged Lord Vishnu as Guru.
