Shravan or Hariyali Teej is a three-day festival of Hindus devoted to the Teej Mata. It comes in the Shravan or Sawan months of the Hindu year. If seen according to the English Calander, usually in the months of July, August, and September. The exact date of the Teej decides via the moon’s cycle. The date for the Teej festival 2021 is also set with the same.

Folks celebrate this festival in different states like Rajasthan, UP, Bihar, Haryana, and Punjab. Not just this, people celebrate Teej in Kathmandu as well. In some places, people call this festival Kajari Teej, while in some Hartalika Teej. But Hariyali Teej is the most renowned name for the Shravan Teej festival.

Time and date for Teej festival 2021

According to the moon cycle in the Shravan month after the full moon, the third day is the Hariyali Teej. This date is according to the Hindu calendar. And, Teej festival 2021 is on August 11, 2021.

The tithi begins from 6:05 PM, August 10, and ends at 4:53 PM, August 11, 2021.

The ritual of Hariyali Teej

The festival is specifically for married women. Married females adorn up like newly married and usually wear red or green colored dresses. They apply mehndi or henna and wear colorful bangles, and do Solah Shringar. Being a three-day festival, each day has a ritual of its own.

The very first day is the Dar Khane Din. On the day, the husbands of the fasting ladies prepare them a meal, and they eat the same. On the second day, women keep the fast. While on the third day, females offer prayers to Teej Mata and lit a lamp for the whole day. During the fast, women neither take water nor consume any fruits or juices the entire day. Moreover, during the day, women play many games, sing Teej songs and do many activities in groups and at home.

Teej Katha is another aspect of the Hariyali Teej. The Katha involves many stories associated with the festival. During the evening, all women gather together to listen to the Katha. They pray to the deity for the healthy well-being and long life of their husbands. They also pray to Teej Mata for blissful and pleasant married life. From offering fruits to flowers, they also lit Deepak or Diyas on this very day. And, when the moon appears, all women finish their fast and have a delicious feast.

Other traditions of the festival

Well, Teej is not all about fasting and getting ready. Folks cook a variety of dishes like Daal Bati Churma and Sattu. Not just this, you can also cook sweets like Ghevar, Besan Laddu, and Kaju Katli for the Teej festival 2021.

Along with it, in some states, females take baths with red mud and purify themselves. With this bathing, they wash off all their sins of the past and purify themselves for the evening, Katha. You may also see girls enjoying the swings in some places enjoying and dancing on Teej and Sharavan songs.
