What Rituals Should One Follow on Vaishakh Amavasya?

Wake up Early 

On Vaishakh Amavasya, one should wake up before sunrise. Take a holy bath in the Ganga or Yamuna, if possible. If, for any reason, one cannot visit a spiritual place, adding a few drops of Gangajal to water is also highly auspicious. 

Observe a Fast 

After taking a bath, make your body ready to fast for the entire day. Consume only fruits, milk, or curd once during the fast. In the evening, also eat vrat-friendly foods such as sabutdana, katu, peanuts, and dry fruits. Ensure that any food you consume is salt-free. 

Offer Pitru Tarpan 

After waking up, offer black sesame seeds mixed with water to the ancestors. Chant their name, give offerings, and pray for their peace or moksha. Visualise them in your mind and imagine that they are receiving your offerings. 

Visit Peepal Tree 

After doing Pitru tarpan at home, visit a peepal tree. It symbolises ancestors or departed souls. If you can do pitru tarpan at home, good; if not, folding hands and taking seven rounds around the peepal tree also means praying for the peace of the ancestors. 

Go to Temple 

In the evening, visit the temple and worship Lord Vishnu and Goddess Laxmi. Chant “Om Namo Bhagavate Vasudevaya.  Light a mustard diya to remove any negative energies from your life. Donate clothes, food, or money to the underprivileged or those in need.
